Cowboy Core Destination: A Modern Take on Eaton Ranch

Cowboy Core Destination: A Modern Take on Eaton Ranch

I’ve always been drawn to the Western Cowboy Core lifestyle—the boots, the hats, the denim, and, of course, the wide-open spaces in the middle of nowhere. So when someone recently asked me about dude ranches, I knew exactly where to send them: Eaton Ranch. If you’re craving an authentic Western experience without the less glamorous chores, like shoveling horse manure, Eaton Ranch is the place to be. Much like the world of TV’s Yellowstone and Longmire, this Wyoming gem lets you live out your cowboy dreams in a rugged Old West meets New West setting.

Eaton Ranch

Located just 30 minutes outside of Sheridan, WY, the 140 year old Eaton Ranch is the oldest operating dude ranch in the country, and for good reason. Spanning 7,000 acres in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains, it perfectly balances adventure and relaxation. It’s no surprise that it was recently ranked #1 on USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Award for the top dude ranch for the Spring 2025.

A True Western Escape

If you’re anything like me, the idea of spending your days in the mountains riding through woods and scenic trails, fishing in crystal-clear waters, and unwinding under the vast Wyoming sky sounds like perfection. Eaton Ranch makes it easy with an all-inclusive experience that includes all levels, from Premium, Standard and Economy, rustic cabins and delicious meals—think made-to-order breakfasts, delicious buffets, and barbecue dinners in an epic Western setting.

One of the best times to visit is Memorial Day weekend for the annual Horse Drive. Picture this: cowboys and horses making their way through the heart of Historic Downtown Sheridan, passing by the legendary Sheridan Inn, where Buffalo Bill once held auditions for his Wild West show. It’s a three-day, 100-mile journey that’s nothing short of spectacular. While you don’t have to work or ride that, you can watch it up close. As the horses wind their way from pasture to ranch!

My Favorite Must-Do Experiences

While Eaton Ranch is the main event, Sheridan itself offers plenty of ways to immerse yourself in the Western spirit. Here are a few of my recommended favorite stops:

Western History & Culture:

King Saddlery

A trip to Don King’s Western Museum behind King’s Saddlery is a must—it’s filled with incredible cowboy artifacts! Including real western history from ranch life to TV and Movies.

The downtown Main Street corridor of Sheridan’s historic district, where old meets new, is an easy walk of shops and artwork displayed about town.

Food & Drink:

The Mint Bar, Sheridan, Wy

  • Breakfast at the Cowboy Cafe is always a solid choice.
  • Bison Union Coffee Shop has the best coffee in town.
  • For lunch, McGregor’s SteakhouseMydland Market or dinner at Frackelton’s never disappoint.
  • No trip is complete without a drink at The Mint Bar, a true Sheridan institution since 1907.
  • If you’re in the mood for something a little different, The Warehouse Gastropub or The Pony Bar and Grill are great spots to grab a drink and a bite.

The Best Times to Visit

If you’re wondering when to go, here are my top picks:

  • Late May, Early June: The ranch is just opening for the season, making it a peaceful, immersive experience.
  • July 9-12, 2025: The WYO Rodeo is in full swing, bringing exciting Western entertainment to town.
